FORMAT: All preliminary heats will be 15 minutes; a maximum of 10 waves may be ridden. Final heats will be 15 or 20 minutes (subject to change); a maximum of 10 waves in 15 minutes or 12 waves I 20 minute finals may be ridden. The best 2 waves will be tallied in all heats.
JUDGING CRITERIA FOR SHORTBOARD: A surfer must perform radical controlled maneuvers in the critical sections of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximize scoring potential. Innovative/progressive surfing as well as a variety of repertoire (maneuvers) will be taken into account when rewarding points for waves ridden. The surfer who executes this criteria with the maximum degree of difficulty and commitment on the waves shall be rewarded the higher scores.
JUDGING CRITERIA FOR LONGBOARD: A surfer must perform radical controlled maneuvers in the critical sections of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximize scoring potential. Traditional surfing as well as a variety of modern maneuvers will be taken into account when rewarding points for the waves ridden. The surfer who executes this criteria with the maximum degree of difficulty and commitment on the waves shall be rewarded the higher scores.
JUDGING CRITERIA FOR BODYBOARD: A bodyboarder must execute the most radical maneuvers in the critical section of the wave, with the fluid linking and combinations of maneuvers, combining speed and power throughout. The bodyboarder who executes such maneuvers on the biggest and best waves for the longest functional distance shall be deemed the winner.
INTERFERENCE – BASIC RULE: The surfer deemed to have the inside position for a wave has unconditional right of way for the entire duration of that ride. Interference will be called if during that ride a majority of judges feel that a fellow competitor has hindered the scoring potential of that surfer deemed to have right of way for the wave.
INTERFERENCE PENALTY: When scoring only the 2 best waves, the interfering surfer will be penalized with a loss of 50% of his/her second best scoring ride. The wave that the interference was called on by the majority of the judges will count in the final tally as a zero. If this surfer incurs another interference penalty during the same heat, his/her best wave score will be halved also. Any surfer who incurs 2 or more interference penalties in 1 heat must immediately leave the competition area.
